What is an intelligent IT system and who needs it?
Throughout my life as a business consultant I have had the pleasure of working with customers in different countries and industries. In this article I want to talk to leading companies in its niche, where the value delivered is magnificent and has potential to expand in the market. The limiting factor of these companies (the neck of the bottle) is not being able to make the right business decisions in the short time for lack of a holistic view of the business.
These companies are easy to identify, there are many. Perhaps you, sir, reader, are the CEO or senior executive of one of them. "Have you taken decisions about the course of your company and then wondered: What was I thinking when I decided that?" Or said , "if you could see things more clearly, it would be easier to make the right decisions!"
If that happened to you, then most likely you fit the profile of companies which I have specialized in supporting. However, I want to be clear: This article does not aim to persuade you to be my client. I just want to show a possible elegant solution to your problems. I call it "an intelligent IT system".
But what is an intelligent IT system?
Good question. We're basically talking about a tool that centralizes the flow and management of information about the business holistically. It facilitates many things like decision making, monitoring, error recognition, planning etc. However, we must be very careful. It is not about installing a software somewhere and then everything will improve as if by magic. Perhaps that’s how companies producing such tools try to sell them, but in most cases it does not work. The key to success is the preparation of the company to the new technology, and then adapting the technology to the reality of the company.
Let's look at it more calmly. The first part of the key is to adapt the company to make the most out of technology. Imagine a car that goes at 5 km/h as maximum speed. This car does not need a suspension system or a 5-speed gearbox. But if our goal is to install a new much more powerful engine so that vehicle can travel at 150 km/h, then you have to make changes, changes that perhaps the pilot had never believed necessary (because they were ever relevant for traveling to 5 km/h). In the business context, we are talking about adapting internal processes, not only to be compatible with the technology, but mainly so that they can make the most out of it. The second point talks about adapting the technology to the company. Once the company has been prepared to travel and grow faster, we must ensure that the system meets the business reality. This section will depend on economic factors (cost of licenses, software maintenance, IT equipment required, etc.) and strategic (scalability of the solution, ability to adapt to new future circumstances, etc.). Also the ability to dynamically adapt the system is crucial. We are no longer in the 70's, now the markets are more volatile than ever. However, few business solutions reflect this!
Given the speed of change in the markets it is time for a new model of thinking and stop operating with outdated strategies, it is time to decide and switch to a new management model of leadership that can compete at the same speed as the market demands. I look forward to having sown the concern about an intelligent IT system for your company. Feel free to contact me through the comments for more information on this and other business issues.
